Electric lawn mowers FAQs

I like electric lawn mowers for being enviro-friendly, but what about the cords?

Dragging around the cords of corded electric lawn mowers is a nuisance. It’s also potentially hazardous, with the potential of accidentally running over the cord with the mower. Fortunately, electric lawn mowers are no longer synonymous with cumbersome cords. The new cordless electric lawn mowers are safer and more flexible. An added benefit is that they start with a switch, not a pull-cord, facilitating startup. Cordless electric lawn mowers run on rechargeable batteries. Not as quiet as reel lawn mowers, cordless electric lawn mowers are still less noisy than gas-powered mowers.

Cordless mowers work best if your lawn is 1/3 of an acre or less, and if you keep your lawn mowed regularly. They’re not effective for larger lawns or for tall grass.

Why is it good to use a non-electric mower?

One of the main reasons to choose a push reel mower over a gas mower is that a non-electric push mower produces no pollution! And, be sure to tell your neighbors too. Think about the difference it will make if your whole street uses this type of pollution-free mower!

What is the first step in choosing a lawn mower?

Compare weight, power, cost, safety features, ease of starting, handling and maneuverability, and ease of clipping disposal.

What kind of mower should I get for my hilly yard?

Select a self-propelled mower if you have a hilly yard or a large lawn.

What are the advantages/disadvantages of an electric mower?

Electric mowers are environmentally friendly and increasing in popularity. Rechargeable types eliminate the need for dragging a cord around. (Cordless mowers now have batteries that allow you to mow up to 1/3 acre.) Be ready to mow more often though; these mowers aren't made for deep cutting.
